In April 2010 I had a priviledge to visit Moscow State University. The МГУ campus (picture), excellent medical library (ЦНМБ), RNCNIRP-colleagues and professors at the university inspired me to write a short paper.
"Voltage transients and possible effects on health through cell membrane functionality disturbance" (PDF)
Update: This paper was be presented in the 4th International HYVITE Symposium on Wellbeing Technology, 9th June 2010, in Tampere, Finland.
(See also a related slide show).
Update 2nd February 2011:
In October 2010 I once again headed to Moscow, to the 6th Radiation Research Conference (VI СЪезд по радиационным исследованиям). This time I was financed by the Finnish Work Environment Fund. The conference paper & presentation was called:"Voltage Transients and Effect on Health" ("Переходное напряжение и его эффекты на здоровье").
I wrote the paper together with professors Maksim Trushin and Roman Muhin (Kazan State University). It was fascinating, my first research paper in Russian and additionally I presented it in Russian :-)
Professor Yuri Grigoriev (RNCNIRP) was in the audience and provided (again) very valuable comments. I am also thankful to professor Igor Belyaev for raising important questions.
Any comments about the research paper or generally about this voltage transients / power quality topic?
I enjoy reading your blog. Good luck at the conference. I'm very interested in this topic as my two young children ages 10 and 8 both carry cell phones. They actually barely use them, but I like them to have access to me when I am not with them.

Hi Joana. Indeed, these reachability and accessibility questions are important for every parent.
I see that risks can be minimised by A) carrying the phone in stand-by mode in the bag pack (not attached to the body) B) using a speakerphone or a air-tube handsfree when a child speaks to the mobile phone. Actually, SMS messages at certain intervals might be a way to keep contact. This way the mobile phone can even be switched off when it is not needed! Nice book about time (management): Bodil Jönsson: Ten thoughts about time. She has great ideas about creativity and accessibility ;-)
Lately, I have found an interesting solution from Germany to minimise radiation exposure: http://strahlungsarme-telefone.esnord.de/ESnord%C2%AE-Handytasche-mit-Strahlenschutz/ESnord-Handytasche-S-black-eleg-mit-Strahlenschutz::113.html?XTCsid=b3b976bd20f7fa916c1baa924610dda3 (The point in English: you keep the mobile phone in the pouch w-h-i-l-e speaking in the mobile phone, even when you hold it against your head!).
P.S. Thank you for encouragement and nice words.
